Relic of the Gone Age

A relic of a long forgotten age, the Sentinel statue still stands guard over the ancient castle tower now buried beneath a huge waterfall..

This project is a mix of 3d rendering and 2d matte painting. The foreground elements and character are made in Maya and rendered in Arnold. The most tricky part to do was definitely the waterfall, which is a Bifrost simulation done in Maya and also rendered in Arnold. I made low poly versions of the castle towers and used them as collision for the sim. Everything is rendered out to separate passes / render elements and comped back together over the BG matte. It was a tough project and took a while to complete, but I'm pleased with the end result! Thanks for looking :)

The castle was blocked out quickly with a simple material as I know I would matte paint over it later.

The statue was made by re-texturing an old model I had made of an armoured warrior.

This is the first of the Bifrost sims I did, it was tough to work with and very computational expensive to do.

I ended up doing a second waterfall sim as I felt it needed a more foamy look.
